Pierovich breaks through
in BCRA at Madera
Scott Pierovich and the Del Morris #17K Esslinger powered midget came close to winning several times during the 2016 Bay Cities Racing Association (BCRA) season, but in BCRA’s final 2016 visit to LoanMart Madera Speedway Saturday October 1, Pierovich and the Morris Insurance team broke through and grabbed the victory
Pierovich was the evening’s fast qualifier by 27/100th of second over Courtney Crone in the Toyota-powered Malloy Special, with 2014 BCRA champion Chad Nichols third in the Shanoian Esslinger, followed by David Goodwill, Frankie Guerrini, Nick Chivello, Dan Gundo, Bobby Wilson, Floyd Alvis and JR Williams. Guerrini won first 8-lap heat race over Pierovich and Nichols, while in the second heat race Chivello was victorious over Crone and Goodwill.
Appearing with the BCRA midgets were ten (10) United State Auto Club (USAC) Western Honda Performance Development (HPD) midgets, dominated by the 17-year old Breidlinger twin sisters from Hillsborough, California. Toni was the evening’s quick qualifier at 14.581 seconds, just edging out Toni at 14.690 seconds. Toni in her #75 machine won her 8-lap heat race, while Annie in her #80 midget was victorious in the second heat race.
Toni Breidlinger shared the front row for the start of the 30-lap feature with Jesse Love IV, and at the drop of the green Toni was squeezed into the outside wall and fell back the third place as Love took the point. Love held the lead until lap when he spun in turn one after he encountered lapped cars. In the ensuing melee, Annie Breidlinger made contact with Love’s machine which flattened her left front tire. She headed to the infield for service during the caution flag period and returned at the tail of the field. Toni had inherited the lead and led the final 12 circuits to win over Tom Paterson and Cody Jessup.
Following the introduction ceremonies on the front straightway of the Madera 1/3 mile oval, Goodwill and Nichols led the field of ten BCRA midgets to the green flag which was pink in honor of cancer awareness. The first start was called back after a spin by Dan Gundo which sent Dan's #6 machine to the tail of the field for the second start. Nichols forged into the lead followed by Pierovich, Goodwill and Crone.
Following a caution for a spin in turn by Bobby Wilson, the torrid racing action resumed with Courtney Crone aggressively moving forward until she spun out of third place in turn two on lap number 7. With Nichols still in control over Goodwill and Pierovich, Crone charged back through the field to run in fifth place before she spun again in turn two on lap 22.
Following the restart, as leader Nichols exited turn two on lap 23, the engine in the Shanoian Esslinger suddenly went quiet and the orange #17N machine coasted to a stop, the result of a broken ignition wire. Pierovich took the lead from Goodwill before the caution flag flew; Scott restarted as the leader and held on over the final 6 laps to record the victory over Goodwill while Courtney Crone recovered from her second spin to finish in third place ahead of Nick Chivello.
The BCRA midgets return to action at the historic Stockton 99 Speedway on Saturday October 8 for the final scheduled BCRA race of the 2016 season. Time trials will start at 5 PM on Saturday with racing at 6 PM in a program with Royal Purple King of the Wing National Sprint Car Series, the NCMA modifieds and San Jose Supermodifieds. There will be an open test and tune session from 4 to 8 PM on Friday October 7.
