2016 USAC Silver Crown schedule
UPDATED 2/2/16 with Salem information

While the schedule for the 2016 United States Auto Club (USAC) Silver Crown Champ Car series features only eleven races, the schedule shows an intriguing mix with six races on dirt tracks and five pavement track races. With races held on tracks racing from 1-1/4 paved to half-mile high-banked dirt, the variety should present a challenge both the drivers and teams in the quest for the championship.

The USAC  Silver Crown series returns in 2016 to two historic USAC venues. On June 10, the Silver Crown cars return to the ½-mile dirt at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania for the first time in 35 years. Williams Grove hosted AAA and USAC Indianapolis cars through the 1950’s at the Indianapolis Sweepstakes, but the last time the long-wheelbase dirt championship cars appeared there was July 5 1980 in a race won by Eddie Leavitt. The 100-lap race on June 10 will honor the memories of great Eastern racers Ted Horn and Bill Schindler.

The other returning venue is Salem Speedway in Salem Indiana which previously hosted a single Silver Crown event on September 18 1980, with Bob Frey winning the 50-lap race run without a caution in 14-½ minutes.  The August 13 night time 75-lap race (reportedly the longest race at Salem in nearly 50 years) on the high-banked paved .555 mile paved track will be known as the "Scott County Visitors Commission Joe James/Pat O'Connor Memorial presented by the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers."  The USAC Silver Crown series will be supported at Salem Speedway by the track's Lucas Oils Great American Stock Car Series and the Midwest Oldtimers Vintage Race Car Club.

Once again USAC will host two Silver Crown events in the Indianapolis area the week before the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500-mile race on May 29, with the Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairground mile dirt track on Thursday night May 26, and two days later a  daytime 100-lap race on the paved 5/8-mile Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg Indiana.
